St Johnson v Celtic
Celtic beat St Johnson one-nil at McDiarmid Park through a Ryan Christie goal that sealed the Hoops thirty-fourth consecutive domestic cup tie win.
Christie swung in a free kick from the right hand touchline which went all the way through the defence and beat Saints’ keeper Zander Clark at his near post.
Celtic came into the game on the back of a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Copenhagen to send them out of the Europa League. Defeat was all the more hard to take after rivals Rangers progressed in the competition.
St Johnstone came into the tie undefeated in three including a draw with Rangers and beating SPL’s ‘best of the rest’ Motherwell.
The first half was a tense affair with both sides keeping it tight.
Celtic’s Callum McGregor had a chance on twelve minutes after nice build-up play outside the box. But McGregor’s shot was far too tame to trouble Clark.
It wasn’t until the thirty-ninth minute that St Johnstone threatened Fraser Forster’s goal. Ryan Christie played a slack pass which allowed Wright in. His shot was well saved by Forster and from the resulting corner the Celtic goalkeeper made another save keeping out Jamie McCart’s looping header.
The second half was more lively. James Forrest dragged a shot wide three minutes after the interval. Odsonne Édouard was put through on goal after a mistake by St Johnstone defender Jason Kerr but the Frenchman’s shot went high and wide.
Christie had two chances to put Celtic ahead, putting a shot just wide after good work from McGregor and then having a point blank shot saved by Clark from six yards.
Christie made amends with only nine minutes left on the clock. His free kick from the right wing was swung in and went all the way through the Saints’ defence to beat Clark at his near post. It was Christie’s nineteenth goal of the season.
Celtic will play Aberdeen in the semi-finals.
