Klassiker Reaction: Pivotal fixtures in the run-in as Bayern and Dortmund chase vital targets

Bayern Munich withstood in a classic on Saturday evening beating old rivals Borussia Dotrmund 4-2. With Bayern having regained top spot after momentarily losing it to RB Leipzig, and Dortmund suffering their ninth defeat of the season to leave the BlackYellows languishing in sixth, what does the remaining fixtures suggest for how both club’s respective seasons will pan out?

FC Bayern on course for record breaking ninth title in a row

Bayern are two points ahead of RB Leipzig having to play ten more matches to claim a ninth Meisterschale in a row.

It’s not all been plain sailing for the undisputed champions of Germany.

Bayern were seven points clear of Leipzig four games ago but a run of a draw against Arminia and a loss to Frankfurt let the Roten Bullen creep back into the title race and reduce the gap at the top of the table to just two points.

Bayern still have to go to Leipzig as well as third placed Wolfsburg whilst welcoming Leverkusen to the Allianz Arena.

Bayern’s Key fixtures

RB Leipzig v Bayern 03/04/21
The new Klassiker? If Leipzig carry on the way they are going they will finish in Bundesliga’s top three for the third time in a row. Leipzig have proven a stumbling block for Bayern with the Reds having drawn the last three matches against the Red Bulls including the stunning 3-3 draw in the Allianz back on matchday 10. Bayern never went ahead the whole game, falling 1-nil then 2-1 then 3-2 behind. Die Rotten Bullen were also the last team to keep a clean sheet against Bayern in the league – over a year ago.

Wolfsburg v Bayern 16-18/04/21
Wolfsburg are emerging as a regular top six outfit in Germany, having an exceptional season this year currently sitting third and having one of the deadliest strikers in the league in Wout Weghorst – the big Dutchman is Bundesliga’s fourth top scorer with 15 goals. Form suggests Bayern will get the points having won all of the last six encounters, Wolfsburg last beating the Reds all the way back in 2015.

Bayern Munich v Leverkusen 20-21/04/21
One of the great clubs of Germany and former European heavyweight beating Manchester United in the semi-finals to make the CL final in 2000/01 – that Zidane goal at Hampden. Also a breeding ground of talent – Michael Ballack, Kai Havertz and now school kid Florian Wirtz. Bayern have won the last three against Die Werkself however Leverksuen beat Bayern in Munich as recently as November 2019 – Flick’s first loss as head coach.

If the stakes were high for Bayern they are astronomical for Dortmund.

The BlackYellows are sitting sixth, four points off the Champions League spots.

Not making Europe’s premier competition next season could have disastrous consequences for a club that for the first time in years have just posted an annual financial loss.

If Dortmund don’t make Europe star players such as Sancho, Haaland and Reyna could be hurried out the club quicker than planned to make up the lost revenues and with the club unable to offer the highest level of competition.

Dortmund’s Key fixtures

Stuttgart v Borussia Dortmund 10/04/21
Stuttgart were the catalyst for the lowest point in Dortmund’s season. Beating the BlackYellows 5-1 on matchday eleven brought about the sacking of Lucien Favre. Dortmund have never really recovered from that defeat with sketchy form for long periods this year including only one win registered in six weeks of football between January and February. The BlackYellow must remember revenge tastes sweet.

Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund 23-26/04/21
Should be a routine three points for Dortmund without 30,000 fans at the efficient Volkswagen Arena. The BlackYellows have beaten Wolfsburg five times in a row including a two-nil win in the reverse fixture back in matchday 14. The BlackYellow have kept eight clean sheets in a row against Wolfsburg. The last time The Wolves found the net against Dortmund was all the way back in 2016.

RB Leipzig v Borussia Dortmund 7-10/05/21
Big one for Dortmund taking on the pretenders to their place as main challengers to Bayern’s supremacy. The two clubs have only met nine times with Dortmund winning five and Leipzig just two, the last for the Red Bulls being a 3-2 win at Signal Iduna Park back in 2017. Dortmund seem to raise their game against Leipzig blowing the Saxony outfit away in the reverse fixture on matchday 15, Haaland stealing the show scoring twice in a 3-1 win.
